13.Our Lady of Seven Dolours Church Festival -2016

Note: My videos on politics and English  can be seen in the  You Tube.

Our Lady of Seven Dolours Church, Vellicode
Annual Festival 2016

President and Parish Priest: Rev. Fr. Leo Alex
Vice President: Mr. Maria John

As usual, the festival started on the second Friday of September 2016.  The church flag was hoisted at 7 P.M. on 9 September 2016.
A brief account of the sermons is given below.

On 9 -9-2016, Rev Fr. Jajakumar said that a man should not point out the mistake of his wife.
He wanted every man to contribute something for the benefit of the society.
In this connection, he narrated the contribution made by a lunatic person and a beggar for the benefit of the society. The former swept a bus stand for some years and drew the admiration of the people. The latter had donated 10 pairs of ear rings to the girl students of a school.

On 10-9-2016, Rev. Fr. Xaviour discussed the virtues of charity. It was somewhat a reflection of the Sermon on the Mount.
On 11- 9-2916, Rev. Fr. Domi Lilil Raja exhorted the people to show mercy on others.
On 12- 9- 2016, Rev. Fr.Dais Regin wanted the young to take care of the old.
On 13-9-2016,  Rev. Fr. Benitto asked the people to share their wealth with others.

On 14-9-2016, Re.Fr.Edison exhorted the people to protect the nature. He narrated the nuclear disaster in Russia and the industrial disaster at the Union Carbide Plant  in Bhopal in India.
He wanted the people to stand by all those who work for protecting the environment.

15-9-2016, Rev. Fr.Charles Viju  said that everyone must face the sufferings and the happiness with calm and equanimity.
16 -9-2012, Rev. Fr. Maria Martin discussed the bad effects of drinking.

On 17 -9-2016, Rev. Fr. Manohiam Xaviour said that a man must be alert. He must utilize his innate potential. A person who utilizes his potential to the maximum level is said to be alert. One day, a sage told an idle man that he could go to heaven only if that dog, that tree or that stone could reach heaven. Apparently, the sermon was a reflection of the Bhagavat Gita.

On 18 -9-2016, Rev. Fr. Then Singh said that the people reserve the right to oppose the rulers if they tend to act in bad faith. He, further, exhorted the  people to oppose capital punishments.

A palanquin-what is called chapparam in the common parlance-procession carrying the statue of the Our Lady of Seven Dolours started at 10.30 P.M. on 17 -8-2016, went through the nook and corners of Vellicode and arrived at the base at 5 A.M on 18 -9- 2016.
          There was no rain.
There was a big crowd. In fact, it was the biggest ever. It was an orderly one. There was virtually no commotion. The police personnel were conspicuous by their absence.
The sweet stalls had a very good business.
The professional beggars were relatively smaller in number.

The audio system was too loud. Many old people resented it. The mothers  whined that the loud sound would affect the hearing abilities of their children. But the visual arrangements were a classic one as seen in the YouTube at

Re.Fr. Andrew, on the same day evening, wanted the people to improve the living conditions of the people.
Rev.Fr. Titus Mohan, on 13 -9-2015, wanted everyone to spare at least 10 minutes every day for the service of his neighbours. He said that the people must save their talents for deeds rather than for words.
Rev.Fr. Senith Xavior, on 14 -9-2015, said that everyone must look after their parents at their old age. He suggested:
1. Re. one lakh each for mother and father in a bank.

4. The sons and daughters must while away a few hours with their parents every year.
Rev.Fr.Pushparaj, on 15 -9-2015, said that some people donate their organs. They are ready even to lose their life for their friends.
In contrast, some people kill others. He said that the governments murder the farmers. “If the people responsible for doing justice begin to do injustice where will the people go” he asked.
Rev. Fr. Edison, on 16 -9-2015, mentioned the bad effects of drinking. He wanted the people to get rid of drinking and make their body a temple of the Almighty.
Rev. Fr. Joy, on 17 -9-2015, said that thieving occurs in different forms. They are:
1. Ordinary thefts for gain like chain snatching, house breaking. Here, a person takes what patently belongs to another man.
2. A person may secretly keep something belonging to others. The act of refusal to return it to the owner is theft.
3. A man possessing power might recommend his friend or a relation to a post displacing another person from the merit list. This is another form of theft.
4. A man must enjoy the fruits of his hard work. If he tends to enjoy something gained without hard work, it becomes an act of theft.
5. Adulteration is another form of theft.
6. Other acts of corruption are nothing but theft.
He, further, said that wages must be according to need. Then, thieving could be controlled.
Rev. Fr. Jagan Basu, on 18-9-2015, said that all men distinguish between right and wrong but they do not possess the courage to tell the truth.
Rev: Fr. Sahayadhas, on 19-9-2015, said that in order to maintain good family relationship, the members of the family must respect and admire one another. They must inculcate a habit of standing for the truth. He added that the money earned by a man would last for four or five generations but the good name earned by a man would endure forever.
Rt. Rev. Jerome Dhas Varuvel, Bishop of Kuzhithurai Diocese, on 20 -9-2015, said that when a man becomes sick, some of his friends go to see him immediately.  In contrast, some others go to see him after a few days as a formality.
He said that Holy Mary responds to the cries of the people immediately.
He said that the education, wealth and other comforts of a man are nothing, if he does not possess ‘a magnanimous heart’.
He urged the people to bear the sufferings of the people and live in the service of humanity.

There was a car procession after the Holy Mass in the morning.
After that, the festival concluded with the lowering of the church flag.

*Rain interrupted the ninth day service at night.
*The functions went on smoothly on the tenth and final day.
 *The modest crowed was orderly.
*There was no police. Some people resented it.
*Smoking was prohibited in the church campus.
*The vehicles were not allowed to enter the church campus for the first time.
  * The preponderance of the professional beggars was relatively greater this year.
* Some overzealous volunteers collected tax from the vendors. Some felt that the collection of this tax must be discontinued.
*To the total discomfiture of the people, there were too many loud speakers. Due to echo, the sermons were not very clear. However, the light arrangements were better.
*Due to rain, the attendance during the car procession was thin.

Note: On the penultimate day of the festival, ie. on 10-9-2015, there was a rejuvenation camp for the senior citizens - above 60 years - of the Parish.
Two well trained ladies ran the show.
After a lot of fun and frolic, a brief speech - that lasted for 3 minutes - wanted the senior citizens not to obey others or think of the past losses. The speech described this as the secret of happiness.
The presentation was a very effective one.
A dinner was arranged by the church authorities.
The senior citizens were very happy.

11. A LETTER TO POPE FRANCIS FROM VELLICODE, INDIA

                                                               Vellicode,

To
The Pope

Italy.
Holy Father,
Sub: The abuse of the confessional- request for its removal –regarding.

I am a Catholic Christian living at Vellicode Parish in the Kottar Diocese in India.
My son wanted to marry a 24 year old girl  brought up as a Hindu.
During the negotiations, I gave an assurance to the bride’s father that marriage would not be used for the conversion of the faith of his daughter.
But the Parish Priest imposed confession as a mandatory requisite for solemnizing the marriage.
Accordingly, the bride had to sit in a confessional against her own will and the Parish Priest gave the confession.
Therefore, the Holy Father is humbly requested to kindly consider the question of removing the confessionals from the churches, so that no girl anywhere in the world would be a victim of a barbaric act of this kind.
Incidentally, a positive action might pave the way for the unification of the church.

                                        I beg to remain,
                                        Yours obediently,

10. OUR LADY OF SEVEN DOLOURS CHURCH : FESTIVAL-2013.

10

Vellicode  Our Lady of Seven Dolours Church Festival - 2013.
President : Parish Priest
Vice President : T. Antony Joe

As usual the festival commenced on the second Friday of September 2013.
The church flag was hoisted at 7 P.M. on 13 September 2013.
The sermons were not up to the mark. Some were disgusting.
Thus, one day a priest compared dissent to cancer. Another priest insinuated that educated people did not take care of their parents. The provocation for these, apparently, was that some people were reluctant to contribute money for the construction of an auditorium cum marriage hall for various reasons.
However, on 16 September 2013, Rev. Fr. Chandrasekhar, Parish Priest Vaenkode, said that a man should not become a burden to others.
On 17 September 2013, Rev. Fr. Christober, Parish Priest, Arochia Nagar, said that a man must get an equal share in the assets of the nation.
On 19 September 2013, narrating a story told by Rt. Rev. Peter Remigious, Bishop of Kottar, Rev. Fr. Robinson, Director, Nangil Milk, said that one should have a firm stand on every issue and he should not remain as a silent spectator.
He added that things that must be destroyed must be destroyed and the things that must be constructed must be constructed. The reference was not a clear one.
On 20 September 2013, Rev. Fr. Y. Xavier, Parish Priest, Chentharai, said that a man must acquire knowledge and keep his eyes open.       On 21 September 2013, Rev. Fr. Maria Martin, Parish Priest, Kuzhivilai, resented the lack of awareness of the youth to various problems.
The crowd was comparable to that in 2012. However, the vendors of toys said that the sales were less.
The tax imposed by church on the sweet vendors was resented by the members of the parish.

9. VELLICODE AND ROYAL CONNECTION

9

VELLICODE AND ROYAL CONNECTION

There was a palace at Amode  in  Kalkulam Taluk in Kanyakumari District.  There existed a nuptial relationship between the Arapparai family in Vellicode and the people who lived in that palace. C.V. Raman Pillai mentioned this in his Rama Rajya Bhagathoor novel. Mr. K.P. Varatharasan has mentioned this in his book titled " Thuruvadi Desam Thiruparpur Paramparai Maveeran Anandapadmanabhan Varalaru".
This indicates the royal connection of the people of Arapparai family in Vellicode.
However, none in Vellicode talk about this now.
